STOP SOPA!
First, let me state that piracy is a huge issue, We need effective legislation to combat intellectual property theft.
The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) does a terrible job of actually combating piracy and has repercussions that negatively affect the internet as a whole.
There are 2 really great videos on the subject.
Jeepers Media has a blazing video on youtube on how the media industry enabled users to pirate movies by being the
exclusive provider of tools and resources to pirate IP.
Fight the future has a cool video on vimeo that describes SOPA's objectives and the effect it will truly have on the internet.
The main website against SOPA is AmericanCensorship.org. They have several great resources for people who are interested in learning more about this law.
The steps needed to fight this or any proposal are as follows:
1) Contact you representatives through email, call and submit request via the web form. I mean all 3, it's not a case of pick one.
2) Sign Petitions at the White House petition site, Demand Progress, and the Petition Site. Also, all 3, it's not a case of pick one.
3) Help others to get involved. The most difficult part is convincing those people who find this kind of stuff unbearable that their voice does count.
Democracy still works and we have a great system of government. We all just need to be more involved than we are currently. This is what the lobbyists fear and feel that it will never happen. People, we have to just take a minute (maybe 5 minutes if you never registered at these sites before) and express our opinions to our representatives. It's not hard, it's not time consuming, and it's what your representatives are hoping for – direction from the voters, the true rulers in this democracy. The only time you lack any power to change our government is when you refuse to use the power you have.
SOPA is simply too rushed to defend intellectual property in a meaningful way. We should be fighting piracy in a more surgical way instead of the blunt force way it proposes.
SOPA is like a pill where the side effects aren't worth the cure, especially since the cure isn't as effective as promised.
